Open Ocean Data, From Coast to Coast to Coast
The Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System (CIOOS) brings together ocean data from Canada’s ocean observing community, enabling an ecosystem for ocean intelligence. Explore an ocean of open-source data, all in one place, and ready to drive discovery.
Built by Canada’s ocean observing community.
Open to everyone.
Canada’s ocean observing community saw a need to bring together observations from across the country and make them freely available to anyone who needs them. CIOOS was established in 2019 to meet that need. MEOPAR has always supported it as a core funder and, since 2025, it has established the national Coordination Office as a MEOPAR team.

Who is CIOOS For?
For Ocean Researchers
- Direct access to Canada’s most comprehensive open-access ocean data
- Standardized, searchable datasets spanning coast to coast to coast
- Ocean-domain-specific data management tools
For Government Funders
and Policymakers
- A partner to manage funded-program data and make it reusable (FAIR/CARE)
- Standardized, open data that bridges science and policy
- An evidence base to track environmental change and evaluate program impact
For the Ocean Sector and Commercial Collaborators
- National-scale data that sharpens business decisions
- Reduced uncertainty and new opportunities surfaced
- Standardized, open-access data across Canada’s coasts and waterways
Collaborate with Us
MEOPAR’s Joint partnerships exist to raise the floor for the entire ocean science sector. Building shared infrastructure removes barriers and multiplies the impact of every dollar invested in Canadian ocean research. If you have an initiative, tool or idea that could create a ripple effect across the research community, consider pitching a partnership and help shape the next chapter of Canadian ocean science.
